This past semester I've had the opportunity to go through this book, "Disciplines of a Godly Man," by R. Kent Hughes. I first heard about the book in a sermon by Dr. Tony Merida and it also came highly recommended in some books that referenced Hughes material. The book has great insights on many areas of life and provides a solid defense for cultivating habits and disciplines in Spiritual life to produce godly character.
The set up of the book is very helpful in preparing the reader for future content and also provides a framework for men to prioritize habits in life that are necessary for righteous living. Each chapter begins with a set up of the topic being discussed, then an argument for the importance of developing this discipline. Hughes has done a wonderful job of integrating in each chapter a singular passage of scripture to emphasize the importance of the discussed discipline. His commentary on the passages is easy to follow and understand. Following are practical sections that discuss various ways to cultivate the main discipline at hand. The end of each chapter has several discussion and reflection questions.
The young men I'm leading through the study have found Hughes writing style both witty, humorous, and most importantly memorable. Hughes does a great job of presenting deep spiritual truths in a readable down to earth way while conveying a sense of urgency and seriousness throughout the book.
This book is great as both a personal study book and as a group study book. Hughes sets up content and extra sources to make this a great discipling tool for men.
I will be posting book notes in the future and listing it here:
1 Discipline of Godliness
2 Discipline of Purity
3 Discipline of Marriage
4 Discipline of Fatherhood
5 Discipline of Friendship
6 Discipline of Mind
7 Discipline of Devotion
