Joshua 6-The Walls Came tumbling down

Storyteller: Erik Pastor
Key Points to Know
1.  God wants us to trust Him
2.  God has trustworthy plans
3. Choosing to distrust God leads to destruction
Key Passage(s)
Passage: Joshua 6
Key Themes:
  • The people of Jericho are terrified because of what they've heard God do for the Israelites
  • God gives Joshua the battle plan for the city
  • God promises that He has given the city into Joshua’s hands
  • Joshua speaks for God and gives the people part of God’s plan
  • The people walk around the city of Jericho 6 days silently(w/ priests and ark leading the way)
  • The 7th day the people marched around the city and at Joshua’s signal began praising God
  • Joshua gives instructions to spare Rahab and her family
  • Joshua gives instructions about not looting and consecrating everything to God to give a tenth(tithe)
  • The city fell and everyone and every animal was put to the sword
  • Joshua puts a curse on the person that tries to rebuild Jericho
  • News of the victory of Jericho spread throughout Canaan and everyone knew the Lord was with Joshua
Reflective Discussion Questions:
  1. How would the instructions God gave Joshua be a challenging thing to follow from a military perspective?
  2. How difficult would it be for the people to follow the instructions Joshua gave?  Do you ever struggle with the instructions God has you?
  3. What is the significance of the people remaining silent till the 7th day?  Why only shout during the 7th day?(shouting better translated as worship, a worship service)
  4. Do you spend time listening and waiting for God? How do you do you listen?  What is the difficult thing about waiting?
  5. Why was Rahab spared?  What makes Rahab’s act of harboring the Israelite spies so noteworthy?  Do you face times of decision where you have the choice to make God a greater reality than your fear?
  6. What were the instructions about looting the city?  Why was it such a big deal to dedicate this city to the Lord?  What was the warning issued for people that loot?
  7. What’s so important about Joshua and the people knowing that the Lord is with them?  Can you confidently say that you know the Lord is with you?
Application
Individual Challenge

Community Challenge
What kind of impact can we have in the Spring semester if we took God at His Word?  How many lives will be changed from our friends and family if we trusted God enough to make Him real in our lives?
