This past winter break I had a little bit more time on my hands than usual and also a lot more laundry to do because I'd put it off for so long! But something I like to do while doing laundry and ironing is to watch T.V. This past winter break I decided that I would watch "Kings." It was a short lived NBC prime time drama. The show is absolutely incredible! I still don't know why they canceled the show.
The show was a modern adaptation of the book of 1 Samuel. It chronicled the reign of Saul and the rise of David. A theme that you see throughout the show and that you kind of pick up on in scripture is the righteousness or heart of David. The show only goes up to the time when David flees Saul by going to Gath (Philisita). Up till this point in scripture we really don't see any character flaws of David, and the same is true in the show. In the show David gets put into so many situations where his character is tested. He has the opportunity to do the wrong thing time and again and each time he surprises everyone by choosing to do what is right even when the right thing isn't in his best interest. David's character is impeccable, he is a man above reproach in the kingdom of Gilboa.
As I reflected on the integrity of David in the show my mind wandered to Psalm 119:9-16.

How can a young person stay on the path of purity?
By living according to your word.
I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.
I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
Praise be to you, LORD; teach me your decrees.
With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth.
I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches.
I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.
I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.
As I pondered this passage and framed it around the context of the life of David a few things came to mind. The first was that I want to be like David. I want to be a person of great integrity. I want to be a person whose character is above reproach. I want to be a trustworthy person whose life is characterized by right action.
The second thing that came to mind was that the only reason why David was a person of great integrity is because of Psalm 119:9-16. David hid God's word in His heart. David knew what God's word said and he took it seriously, he valued and obeyed God's word.
So some questions for reflection:
Reflection Questions:
1. What does God's Word tell me about becoming a person if integrity?
2. What does God's Word tell me about staying on the path of purity?
3. Do I make it a habit to seek and know God's Word?
4. How do I delight in God's decrees?
5. What does it mean to not neglect God's Word? How do I show that I value God's Word?
